Shreyas Iyer scored 21 off 24 balls against Pakistan in Asian Games 2026 Final

The Indian Cricket Team have adopted a more attacking approach in T20I cricket in recent times. The top-order batters look to score quickly from the start and put pressure on the opposition. This also means the middle-order batters need to adjust their game according to the situation.

Captain Shreyas Iyer has an important role in this batting setup. Since taking over as India’s T20I captain in June 2026, he has mostly batted at No. 4. Unlike the openers, Iyer often comes in after the first few overs and has to decide whether to attack or first settle the innings.

His recent performances show that he can score quickly, but his approach has not always been as aggressive as India’s openers. This has raised questions about whether Iyer is fully adapting to the team’s new batting style.

Iyer’s recent innings do not suggest that he has completely struggled with India’s aggressive approach. Instead, his performances show that he has changed his game depending on the situation.

Against Zimbabwe, Iyer scored 28 off 24 balls, 25 off 20 and 27 off 18 balls. He then scored 8 off 5 against Afghanistan before making 11 off 11 and 29 off 20 in the next two matches.

His strike rate across these innings ranged from 100 to 160. This shows that Iyer has been able to increase his scoring when the situation allows him to do so. However, on most occasions, he hasn’t been able to up the ante

Iyer’s job is not always about hitting from the first ball. Batting at No. 4 means he can sometimes be required to steady the innings, especially when the team loses wickets or the pitch is difficult to bat on.

That was visible against Japan in Sano. Iyer scored 16 off 12 balls in a low-scoring match that India won by just two runs. He was also Player of the Match in that clash.

In the Asian Games final against Pakistan, Iyer scored 21 off 24 balls on a sluggish pitch before being dismissed by Abrar Ahmed. His strike rate of 87.50 was much lower than his recent numbers. Iyer has been doing well for India, but at times he needs to change his approach and play aggresively. His ability to adjust according to the conditions can be useful for India as well.
