England’s preparations for the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand have begun ahead of the opening match at Lord’s from June 4. Players have started returning from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 and rejoining the national setup.
The England management has been monitoring the fitness of multiple players following the conclusion of their franchise commitments. Injuries sustained during the IPL have created selection considerations ahead of the start of the home summer.
One player whose fitness has attracted attention is Jacob Bethell. The 22-year-old returned to England after suffering a finger injury while representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL, leaving questions over his availability for the first Test against New Zealand.
Jacob Bethell expected to be fit for ENG vs NZ Lord’s Test

According to ESPNCricinfo, Jacob Bethell is expected to be available for England’s first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s despite the ring finger injury he sustained during IPL 2026.
Bethell returned home from India after injury, which ruled him out of the remainder of the IPL season and prompted England to assess his condition ahead of the Test series.
However, England are optimistic about his recovery and currently expect him to be fit for the opening Test. The report added that the injury is continuing to be monitored by the medical staff.
England head coach Brendon McCullum indicated that Bethell is progressing well, while England have not announced any replacement player in the squad.
Bethell has become an increasingly important member of England’s setup across formats and is among the players expected to play a key role for the side against New Zealand. The series will be important for both teams as it will be part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27.
