Jacob Oram played 33 Tests, 160 ODIs, and 36 T20Is during his 11-year playing career.
Former New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram has been appointed as the bowling coach of the senior men’s cricket team. Oram filed for the job after Shane Jurgensen left the post in November 2023. The former all-rounder will start the job from October 7.
The 46-year-old began his coaching career in 2014 after being appointed as bowling coach of the New Zealand A team. Oram also coached the New Zealand women’s cricket team from 2018 until the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup in 2022.
Oram has also been associated with the Black Caps senior men’s cricket team in the past on short stints. He was with the team during the Bangladesh test tour in 2013, the Australia T20I series in February 2024 and the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year in June.
He has also coached different franchises across various tournaments. The former all-rounder was the head coach of the Central Hinds in the Super Smash, the assistant coach of the Northern Warriors in the T10 league, and the bowling coach of MI Cape Town in SA20.
New Zealand team has been a big part of my life: Jacob Oram
After being permanently appointed as the bowling coach of the senior men’s cricket team, Oram said that he is excited to get the opportunity to work for the Black Caps again.
“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to be involved with the Black Caps again. To be back involved with a team that means so much to me and has been a big part of my life is a real honour. The recent opportunities I’ve had have been a great insight into where this team is going and I’m excited to continue that work in the coming seasons,” Jacob Oram said.
“There’s a fresh new wave of talent coming through in the Black Caps bowling ranks and I hope that I can share my knowledge and experience to help best prepare them for the challenges of international cricket,” Oram added.
Oram is a great operator: Head coach Gary Stead
New Zealand cricket team head coach Gary Stead was happy with Oram’s appointment to the coaching staff. Stead added that the all-rounder’s experience of coaching previously will bring out the best in the players.
“Jake’s a great operator. His career as a player and his experiences as a coach speak for themselves. He brings a deep understanding of the international game, but also experience in franchise cricket which will be worthwhile in understanding the modern player and the changing landscape of the modern game. It’s a really exciting opportunity for him and we’re looking forward to having him join the group full-time,” said Stead.
