James Anderson retired from international cricket after the first test against West Indies at the Lord’s in July.
James Anderson enjoyed a fitting farewell moment with the English crowd as he chugged a pint of Guinness, an Irish dark beer, at the Lord’s balcony in front of hundreds of fans following his last career test match.
The legendary England pacer concluded his 21-year illustrious test career in July this year with the first test of the summer, against the West Indies at the iconic Lord’s stadium.
James Anderson retired with 188 test caps and 704 wickets, both the highest for a pacer in the longest format.
I wasn’t planning on downing a pint on the balcony: James Anderson
About an hour after the conclusion of the match, Anderson appeared at the Lord’s balcony with a glass of beer in his hand. The crowd was positioned below the balcony on the ground and it made up for an epic scene as he chugged the entire glass.
Recently, the 42-year-old opened up about his emotions and thoughts at the moment.
“I wasn’t planning on downing a pint on the balcony,” Anderson told Mail Sport. “But I just wanted to go out and see what the outfield looked like, it was incredible.”
“I didn’t really know what to expect going into that week, but to see the size of the crowds there, and the reaction that I got walking through the long room, I was amazed and delighted with how that Test went. It was really an amazing few days and just a special occasion, especially with my family and friends there.”

After retiring, Anderson swiftly moved into the role of a mentor and bowling coach for the rest of the summer.
He explained his new role, “I’ve really enjoyed still being around the group. I found the switch relatively straightforward, because it’s probably been my job for the last 10 or so years, being a senior bowler in the team and helping the other guys by leading the attack on the field and also trying to help new guys settle in.”
