Janith Liyanage scored 20 runs in the first ODI vs India in Colombo.

A brain fade moment occurred during the first match of the three-match ODI series between Sri Lanka and India when Sri Lankan all-dounder Janith Liyanage walked back to the dressing room without edging to the first slip. The incident happened at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on August 2.

The Indian bowlers bowled tidily as they restricted hosts Sri Lanka to 230-8 in 50 overs after Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bat first.

India left-arm speedster Arshdeep Singh and spinner Axar Patel bagged two wickets each. Mohammed Siraj, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav took one scalp apiece.

For the hosts, opener Pathum Nissanka played a gritty knock of 56 runs off 75 balls, whereas Dunith Wellalage remained not out on 67 runs and added crucial runs towards the end, which helped Sri Lanka reach 230.

In 35th over of the Sri Lanka’s innings, Axar Patel bowled a full-length delivery that was angled in and spun away sharply from Liyanage, who skipped down the pitch for a big shot, but missed the ball. The ball took a deflection off wicket-keeper KL Rahul and then went into the hands of Rohit Sharma, who was positioned at first slip.

The Indian fielders appealed instantly as they thought Liyanage had edged it. However, umpire Joe Wilson was not convinced initially but he raised his finger after seeing that Liyanage had started to walk on his own.

Ultra Edge later showed that Liyanage hadn’t edged the ball. The Sri Lankan dugout was shocked as Liyanage walked even when Wilson hadn’t raised his finger initially.
