Jason Holder won the T20 World Cup 2016 with West Indies.

In a massive blow to the co-hosts, West Indies veteran all-rounder Jason Holder has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 due to an injury. The Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Sunday, May 26, named replacement for Holder.

The year’s marquee ICC tournament will be jointly hosted by the USA and West Indies.

Holder sustained an injury during the County Championship 2024 season and his recovery period won’t allow him to feature in next month’s tournament. The team’s medical staff will provide all necessary support to ensure the veteran all-rounder recovers swiftly, the board asserted.

Earlier, the CWI announced a 15-member squad, with star player Rovman Powell leading the side in the upcoming global tournament. However, the two-time T20 World Cup champions will be without the services of their former captain for the home tournament.

Despite missing the services of Holder, the two-time T20 world champs continue to boast plenty of middle-order hitters and all-rounders, including Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Shimron Hetmyer, Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd, all of whom provide ample options to choose from.

Who replaced Jason Holder in the West Indies squad for the T20 World Cup 2024?

The CWI has named left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy as Holder’s replacement for the upcoming T20 World Cup. CWI Lead selector Desmond Haynes expressed the importance of Holder’s experience but showed confidence in the abilities of left-arm speedster McCoy.

“Jason is an experienced player in our set-up. His absence will undoubtedly be felt both on and off the field. We look forward to having a fully fit Jason with us again soon.” Desmond Haynes, Lead Selector of CWI said.

“While it is unfortunate to lose a player of Jason’s caliber, we are confident in the abilities of Obed McCoy. Obed has shown remarkable skill and promise in his performances, and this opportunity will allow him to further showcase his talent on the international stage. We believe he will bring a fresh and dynamic energy to the squad,” Haynes added.

CWI includes five reserve players for the T20 World Cup 2024

In addition to the main squad, the CWI has also named five reserve players – Kyle Mayers, Matthew Forde, Fabian Allen, Hayden Walsh and Andre Fletcher.

Head Coach Daren Sammy expressed his confidence in the reserves, stating, “We are fortunate to have such depth and quality in our ranks. Our reserve players are all A-class talents who have proven their abilities in various formats of the game, but certainly T20. Each one of them is fully capable of slotting into the team seamlessly should the situation arise.”
