Jasprit Bumrah finished as the leading wicket-taker in test cricket in 2024.

Jasprit Bumrah has been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for December 2024 on the back of his outstanding performances in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

In December, Bumrah played three tests against Australia in Adelaide, Brisbane, and Melbourne, and took 22 wickets at an average of 14.22. Bumrah’s tally of 22 included four wickets in Adelaide followed by nine each in Brisbane and Melbourne.

In a series where India’s batting disappointed on most occasions, Bumrah carried the visitors, emerging as the leading wicket-taker of the series. However, Bumrah’s efforts couldn’t guide India to victory as they lost in Adelaide and Melbourne and drew the game in Brisbane.

For this award for December, Bumrah faced strong competition from Pat Cummins, who took 17 wickets in three games and played crucial knocks in both innings of the Melbourne test to help Australia secure a memorable victory.

Bumrah’s 2025, however, has started on a tough note. The fast bowler was sent to the hospital for scans during the first innings of the Sydney test after bowling just one over post-lunch on Day 2 due to back spasms. Bumrah didn’t return and was absent in Australia’s chase.

Despite his absence for most of the last test, Bumrah was named Player of the Series for his exceptional performances. During the series, he also surpassed Kapil Dev to become the Indian bowler with the most wickets in Australia in test cricket.

Furthermore, his tally of 32 wickets in the series is now tied for the most wickets in a single BGT series, alongside Harbhajan Singh, who achieved this feat during the 2001 home test series.

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 scheduled for February and March, India will closely monitor Bumrah’s fitness.
