NCA Coach reveals Jasprit Bumrah remodeled his action to avoid injuries in future

Jasprit Bumrah won the Player of the Match award on his comeback game against Ireland.
From September 2022 against Australia to August 2023 against Ireland, Jasprit Bumrah was out of action for about 11 months. Suffering from a back injury, Bumrah missed out on multiple big events for team India and also the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians. He made his comeback for India as a captain in the ongoing Ireland tour for a short three-match T20I series.
Bumrah’s comeback became more special as he got two wickets in his first over and also won the Player of the Match award. Bumrah bowled an economical spell of 24 for 2 in the first T20I. Bumrah did his homework at the NCA and made a slight change to keep himself away from injuries.
Jasprit Bumrah added 2-3 more strides
At the National Cricket Academy, a level 3 certified coach told PTI that Bumrah slightly tweaked his action to prevent injuries in the future. The coach said, "Prior to his stress fracture breakdown, if you closely watch Bumrah’s bowling videos, he would first briskly walk for six to seven steps and then load up at the bowling crease on his seventh stride to unleash his thunderbolts."
"While watching him bowl against Ireland, one could witness that he has increased his run-up by 2-3 strides with a bigger follow-through compared to earlier times. It’s not a massive revamp of his action but a slight bit of remodeling in order to stay away from injury." told the coach
Why he made a change in action?
On explaining Bumrah’s decision to add up to 2-3 strides more to his action, Coach explained, "It is all about having increased momentum, which is a must for tearaway quick bowlers. Boom (Bumrah) was earlier like a fighter jet. Even a shorter run-up after a few rapid walking strides meant that the extra pace that he generated came from the thrust provided by his shoulder and back".
"The injury was bound to happen because his run-up hardly gave him any momentum." Bumrah underwent surgery in March 2023 to overcome his back injury, and since then he has been in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.
Bumrah was bowling 12-15 overs at NCA
Jasprit Bumrah had revealed that he was bowling about 12–15 overs daily in the nets while he was spending his time at NCA. He also said that he didn’t feel like he had missed anything in the last year. Bumrah, with World Cup 2023 in his sights, has done all the hard work to get fit just before the big Asia Cup 2023. Bumrah required a little game time, and the ongoing Ireland series is providing him that opportunity.
Bumrah did well in his comeback and still has two more games before he lands his yorkers against Pakistan batters in the Asia Cup at Pallekele in Kandy on the 2nd of September. India will also play a three-match ODI series against Australia just before the start of World Cup 2023 in India.
