Jay Shah gave a hint on Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid’s coaching tenure.
Rahul Dravid, esteemed head coach of Indian cricket team, has been instrumental in guiding the squad to significant achievements. Recently, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) extended his coaching tenure, marking a continued partnership after the end of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. However, amidst the celebration of this extension, the duration of Dravid’s renewed contract remains shrouded in mystery.
In a recent announcement, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah shed light on the future course of action regarding Rahul Dravid’s coaching tenure. While the contract extension was confirmed without specifying the duration, Shah has now provided an update on the timeline for clarity. The upcoming South Africa tour holds the key to unveiling the specifics of Dravid’s commitment to leading Indian cricket team.
Jaya Shah opens up on Rahul Dravid’s coaching tenure
Dravid’s tenure as the head coach has witnessed notable triumphs, including guiding Rohit Sharma-led team to the finals of the World Test Championship and the ODI Cricket World Cup. BCCI, in a statement, expressed their satisfaction with Dravid’s performance and unanimously agreed to extend his tenure, along with the support staff.
Despite the official extension, the contract duration remained undisclosed in the press release. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, in a recent statement to PTI, stated, “We have given the extension but we are yet to finalise the contract. We did not get time at all, they finished (with the World Cup). I had a meeting with them (Dravid & Co.) and we agreed mutually that they will continue. We will sit down and decide once they return from South Africa.” This statement comes as Indian cricket team gears up for South Africa tour, which commences on December 10.
Dravid, entering his second stint with team India, has a packed schedule ahead, including series against South Africa, England, Afghanistan, and the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The announcement of the contract extension came after India’s commendable runners-up finish in the ICC Cricket World Cup at home.
Before departing for South Africa tour, Dravid, when asked about his contract duration, responded, “It’s announced officially, I haven’t signed anything yet (on contract duration), let the papers come officially from the BCCI.”
