Rohit Sharma has not played a single T20I game after the T20 World Cup loss in 2022.

Two of India’s most senior batters have not represented India in the shortest format of the game since the semi-final loss against England in T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. The next edition of the biggest T20 international tournament is just 6 months away and the Indian camp seems to have no clarity on skipper Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli. Both of them have not played a single T20I game after the semi-final loss and Indian team management preferred youngsters over them in this format.

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah also refused to give any thoughts about the future of two of the Indian superstar batters in the T20I format. It was expected that Rohit Sharma would be back as leader of the squad after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India but he wasn’t there for the five-match T20I series against Australia and also for the tour of South Africa starting on Sunday. In absence of Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav was picked as captain in T20I format on both occasions.

Jay Shah refuses to give clarity on Rohit Sharma

Speaking to media on the sidelines of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction in Mumbai, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on Rohit Sharma, “What is the need to have clarity right now? It (T20 World Cup) is starting in June, we have the IPL before that and the series against Afghanistan.” According to Jay Shah, team management and the Indian skipper have ample amount of time to discuss the future in limited limited-overs format, especially in the T20I format for India.

Team India will be left with just three T20I games before T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and the USA. After the South Africa tour, India will host Afghanistan for a three-match T20I series and they will probably once again go with a young skipper and young team to take on inexperienced Afghanistan. The IPL 2024 might be the tournament that decides the future of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in T20Is.

According to BCCI’s statement while announcing the squads for SA tour, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both asked for rest from the white-ball leg of the South African tour. India’s plan for the upcoming T20 World Cup looks uncertain as the team may have an assigned skipper in Rohit Sharma but he has not played a single game after the 2022 edition. India have played in this format under 6 different captains in the last 14 months. The T20 mega event will be played in June 2024, right after the IPL 2024 in April and May.
