Mohammed Shami has been out of action since the conclusion of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah provided crucial fitness update on veteran speedster Mohammed Shami and young pacer Mayank Yadav.
Shami has been out of cricketing action since the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia, which the Indian cricket team lost in Ahmedabad. The right-arm speedster was the highest wicket-taker during the tournament. Shami played World Cup 2023 with an ankle injury.
In February 2024, the 33-year-old underwent surgery in London and is now aiming for his international comeback through domestic cricket. Recently, Shami attended an event in Kolkata, where he expressed that he would want to play some domestic games for Bengal before making his international comeback.
Meanwhile, Mayank, who grabbed the attention of cricketing fans with his fast bowling in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, has been out of cricketing action due to an abdominal muscle tear injury.
In the IPL 2024, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) speedster Mayank complained of abdominal pain during a match against Gujarat Titans. He then missed a few games for Lucknow.
The youngster then made a return to the LSG playing XI during a group stage match against the Mumbai Indians. Sadly, the 22-year-old went off the field once again after bowling 3.1 overs.
The right-arm speedster once again complained of abdominal pain and later on it was revealed that Mayank suffered from an abdominal muscle tear, which ruled him out of the remainder of the IPL 2024.
Jay Shah provides fitness update of Shami and Mayank
Recently, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah provided a crucial update on the fitness of Shami and Mayank. Shah revealed that Mayank is currently in the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Shah further said that they need veteran speedster Shami for the upcoming high-voltage series against Australia.
Shah added that there is no guarantee on Mayank’s place in the Indian team as of now, but they see potential in him for the future.
“Your question about Shami is right, but I cannot give you any answer on Mayank Yadav as there is no guarantee whether he will be in the team or no. But he is potentially a good fast bowler, and we are looking after him. He is currently in the NCA. Shami will be there because he is experienced, and we need him in Australia,” Jay Shah told to TOI when asked about Shami and Mayank’s fitness.
