Joe Root returned as England’s Test captain against Pakistan at Headingley.

Joe Root’s remarkable longevity and consistency in the longest format of the game were once again in the spotlight during his crucial innings for England in the ongoing first Test against Pakistan (ENG vs PAK) at Headingley.

The veteran batter returned to the role of England captain for the first time after four years, following Ben Stokes’ retirement. Root has established himself as England’s greatest-ever cricketer; he is England’s highest run-scorer and also the second-highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket.

His consistency over more than a decade has made him one of the only contenders within a touching distance of former Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s Test batting records.

Joe Root entered Headingley with an added responsibility on his burdened shoulders, as England are also going through a slight phase of transition. Being their most experienced batter, Root is always responsible for managing the core of their innings.

Ahead of the 1st Test between England and Pakistan, Root was just one half-century away from equalling Sachin Tendulkar‘s record for the most half-centuries in Test cricket, and with a half-century in England’s ongoing innings at Headingley, the English great has reached the massive milestone.

Root completed his 68th Test half-century on the second day, before being dismissed for 66 off 112 balls (including 10 fours).

The significance of this achievement lies in the fact that Root reached the milestone having played 33 fewer matches than the Indian legend, and he now has the opportunity to break one of his long-standing Test records.

England made an excellent start to the series right after two major changes in their red-ball dynamic. Stephen Fleming was appointed as the new head coach of the English side while Root took over the captaincy. However, Marcus Trescothick has stepped in as the interim coach until Fleming’s arrival.

Going through a tough phase of transition and following a crushing home Test series defeat against New Zealand, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue capitalised on the conditions, with both claiming five-wicket hauls.

After a good start, the English openers Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay were dismissed on Day 1. Joe Root and Jordan Cox helped England stabilise the innings. After a good partnership between the two, the two half-centurions were dismissed after the lunch break on Day 2, following Root’s iconic achievement.
