ENG vs IND: Joe Root equals Steve Smith's record for most test tons against India

Joe Root and Steve Smith have scored 11 centuries against India in tests.

England Cricket Team are facing Indian Cricket Team in third test of the five-match series at the Lord’s. On day two of the game, Joe Root slammed a century in the first innings. With his century, the England batsman has earned a brilliant record against India.

Root has equalled Australian batter Steve Smith’s record for most centuries against India in test cricket. Both batsmen have slammed 11 centuries against India. Root has reached the mark in his 60th innings against India.

The next three batsmen on the list are former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, former West Indies captain Vivian Richards and former West Indies player Garry Sobers. All of them have scored eight tons against India in tests.

Joe Root completes 3000 test runs against India

With his centuries in the Lord’s test, Root has also become the first batsman to score 3000 runs against India in test cricket. Root has so far scored 3059 runs against India in 33 tests at a brilliant average of 57.71. He has also hit 12 fifties.

Root now accounts for 37 centuries in test cricket, which is fifth-most by a batter in the longest format of the game. He overtook Rahul Dravid and Steve Smith, who both have 36 test tons to their name.

Notably, this is Root’s first century in the ongoing test series. He has made a brilliant comeback at the Lord’s following his dismal show in the last game at Edgbaston, where he lost his wickets for 22 and six across both innings.

Talking about the game, Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bat first. Nitish Reddy gave the first two breakthroughs to India on day 1, dismissing openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett.

In the first session of day 2, Jasprit Bumrah grabbed the crucial wickets of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Chris Woakes. England have crossed 300 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of seven wickets. The five-match test series is tied 1-1.
