Not Harry Brook! Joe Root set to become England Test captain again; Know here

Joe Root has led England in most matches as captain in Test cricket.
Joe Root stepped down as the Test captain of the England team in April 2022 after a string of failures. He holds the record for most matches as England test captain. Under his captaincy, England played 65 tests and won 27 of them with a win percentage of 41.53.
However, he made his return as captain during the second test against New Zealand in June, in the absence of Ben Stokes. And now, some reports in English media claim that Root is back in the race to become the English test captain.
Notably, Ben Stokes announced his retirement after the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. England are set to host Pakistan for a three-match test series, starting on August 19 in Leeds. Hence, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is in search of the new captain after Stokes.

After Stokes, England don’t have many options to choose from. Former vice-captain Ollie Pope, who captained England in five tests, has lost his place in the team. Meanwhile it seems England don’t want to put Harry Brook, who is ODI and T20I captain, under pressure by giving him Test captaincy.
That has left them with the option of Joe Root, who has immense experience of leading the country at the highest level. This will be the second stint for Root as Test captain. As per reports, the ECB are all set to make the announcement very soon as they announce the squad for the Pakistan series.
Root is likely to remain the captain until the Ashes next year. It will give England time to find and groom the next captain of the Test team. However, after the sacking of Brendon McCullum from the test format, England are also in search of the new head coach.
The ECB are in talks with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick to take over the team as interim coach on a temporary basis for the upcoming series. It has been a tough last month or so for the England Test team.
They are exploring the best available options for who can take charge of the team. Though there is no official confirmation, it will be interesting to see whether Root, who is in the final phase of his career, is ready to take the responsibility.
