Wicket-keeper batter Jonny Bairstow has said that he is not confident about his return to the England Cricket Team. The right-handed batsman is part of Welsh Fire in the ongoing The Hundred 2025 tournament in England.
A few years ago, Bairstow was a regular member of the England team across all three formats. However, the 35-year-old lost his place to the emerging youngsters. His last international outing was a T20I game against India during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which took place in June last year.
His last ODI game came during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, when he played against Pakistan at Eden Gardens. In March 2024, he played his last test against India in Dharamsala, featuring in his 100th test for England.
I think it’s doubtful: Jonny Baristow responds to comeback in England team
On Saturday (August 9), Bairstow hammered a wonderful knock of 85 runs off 50 deliveries in a losing cause during a clash against London Spirit in The Hundred 2025. After the match, he reacted to a question on his national comeback during a chat with host Isha Guha.
“Oh look, if that comes, that comes but I think it’s doubtful, judging by the fact that I’ve not heard too much,” he said.
A few months ago, Bairstow played for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The right-handed batsman was picked as a replacement for Will Jacks in the playoffs and scored 85 runs across two games as an opener.
Notably, Bairstow became a poster boy for England’s Bazball approach during its inception a few years ago. The right-handed batsman helped England win many games during chases with his hard-hitting approach. However, he gradually lost his spot in the test side.
