Kagiso Rabada played a key role in South Africa’s maiden ICC WTC2025-27 triumph over Australia in 2025.
South Africa are preparing for an important period in international cricket, with a very demanding home season ahead with several crucial assignments across all three formats of the game. The Proteas will want their leading players to remain fit as they attempt to hold on to their success in Test cricket and strengthen their position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, alongside preparing for the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
Among the first important figures in South Africa’s plans would be Kagiso Rabada. The experienced fast bowler remains the spearhead of their pace attack across all three formats. His ability to generate pace, early movement and his influence over red-ball cricket make him an invaluable component of South Africa’s bowling combination.
Kagiso’s importance becomes even greater with Australia scheduled to tour South Africa for three ODIs and Tests in September-October. This is the clash between the former WTC champions and the WTC defending champions, which holds immense significance for both teams. They also currently sit at the top of the WTC 2025-27 points table, with Australia at the top, followed by South Africa in second.

Kagiso Rabada suffered a right hamstring injury during winter training. Latest reports in News 24 have indicated that the injury is far more serious than it was earlier thought, which might push his recovery period to a greater length.
The injury has been classified as a Grade 3 hamstring injury, which means Rabada would now face a recovery period of around 10 weeks. The timeline hence puts his potential return around November, although that can only be confirmed after subsequent medical assessments following his rehabilitation.
His domestic bowling coach, the great Allan Donald, said that Rabada is likely to miss the entire stretch of the Australia tour of the South Africa series. That rules him out of the scheduled ODIs between the 24th and 30th of September and the three-match Test series scheduled for October 9-13 in Durban, October 18-22 in Gqeberha and October 27-31 in Cape Town.
Rabada is a massive figure in South African cricket because of his enormous contributions with 340 and 168 wickets in the Test and ODI formats, respectively. South Africa will now have to rebuild their attack around alternatives while ensuring that the veteran pacer gets sufficient time to recover.
