South African speedster Kagiso Rabada is closing in on 300 test wickets.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada strengthened his legacy as one of South Africa‘s greatest pacers as he moved to the number six spot on the tally of most test wickets for his country.

He went past one of South Africa’s finest, Jacques Kallis, and is now closing in on 300 wickets in the format, and stands not far away from Morne Morkel and Allan Donald.

His bowling average of 22.02 at the moment is better than anyone in the top 10 test wicket-takers in South Africa’s history, including the great Dale Steyn, who tops the list with 439 test scalps at an average of 22.95.

South Africa are playing West Indies in the first match of the two-match test series in Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad, where Rabada took a three-wicket haul in West Indies’ first innings.

These three wickets took his wickets tally to 294, surpassing Kallis’ tally of 291 scalps. While Kallis took 270 test innings to claim 291 scalps, Rabada went past him in his 113th bowling innings.

Most test wickets for South Africa:

  1. Dale Steyn – 439
  2. Shaun Pollock – 421
  3. Makhaya Ntini – 390
  4. Allan Donald – 330
  5. Morne Morkel – 309
  6. Kagiso Rabada – 294*

As someone who has given test cricket his priority, Rabada, currently aged 29, is expected to reach the milestone of 400 test wickets in his career.

He made his test debut in 2015 and immediately stood out even while playing with the likes of Steyn, Morkel and Vernon Philander. Since the retirement of these legends, he smoothly took over the duties of being the leader of South Africa’s pace attack.

Ahead of the start of the West Indies test series, Kagiso Rabada spoke of nearing the 300 test wickets milestone.

He told ESPNcricinfo, “It will be such a special landmark but I’m not focused on that. It will just be a byproduct. I’m just focused on making sure that I’m there for the team and that I find a way to put in a performance. Putting in a performance ultimately means that the team is moving in the right direction and that I’m doing my part.”
