Kane Williamson played crucial role in Blackcaps' campaign in 2015 and 2019 World Cup.

New Zealand will be boosted by the presence of their regular white-ball skipper, Kane Williamson, in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Williamson is currently recovering from an ACL injury. He got injured in the opening game of IPL 2023 while playing for the Gujarat Titans against Chennai Super Kings. Williamson has been away from the cricket action since then. He played a crucial role for his team in the previous edition of World Cup in 2019 in England. New Zealand ended up as the runners-up in the tournament.

Williamson will be part of the camp

New Zealand Cricket informed the press, "After injuring his knee playing in the IPL in March, Williamson has made sufficient progress in his recovery to allow him to be included in the squad for the tournament starting in October." New Zealand cricket team is currently on a tour of England to play 4 T20Is and 4 ODIs. Williamson is also part of Blackcaps camp. New Zealand cricket will announce their World Cup squad on September 11.

Talking about his comeback and injury, Williamson said, "Through this entire process, I have tried to keep an open mind on when I might be able to return to cricket and not get too focused on one date or match. Being selected doesn’t change that, and I know there’s still work to do and day-by-day goals to tick off to get back on the field with the team." Williamson might miss a few initial matches in the tournament, but he can be seen in action in the mega event.

Earlier, New Zealand coach Gary Stead also revealed that he will be taking Williamson along as the team's mentor for the upcoming World Cup in India if he isn't fit enough to travel as a player. Stead also said that right-handed batter has done everything possible to make his comeback in international cricket as soon as possible. Kane Williamson scored 578 runs in nine innings for his team in 2019 World Cup. He also played a massive role in the Blackcaps campaign in 2015 in Australia and New Zealand.
