Karun Nair made his test debut in 2016.
Karun Nair is often regarded as one of the unluckiest Indian players. Making his debut in 2016 during the home test series against England, Nair earned high praise by becoming only the second Indian batsman, after Virender Sehwag, to score a triple century in test cricket with his remarkable 303-run knock in Chennai.
Despite his incredible performance, Nair was surprisingly dropped for the next test against Bangladesh in February 2017, with senior batsman Ajinkya Rahane returning to the lineup.
This decision marked the start of Nair’s struggles. He spent several matches on the sidelines, and then in the home series against Australia, he managed just 53 runs in three tests. His last test appearance came in March 2017 against Australia in Dharamshala.
Nair, however, has turned things around with his outstanding performances in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. The 33-year-old has been dismissed only once in the tournament in six innings and has played a key role in guiding his team, Vidarbha, to the semi-finals.
Nair equals historic Vijay Hazare Trophy record amid sensational form
Nair’s remarkable form has seen him match Narayan Jagadeesan’s record of scoring the most centuries (five) in a single Vijay Hazare Trophy edition. Jagadeesan hit five hundreds in the 2022-23 season.
He started the tournament with a brilliant hundred against Jammu and Kashmir and followed it up with centuries against Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
Although Nair didn’t score a century against Chhattisgarh, he remained unbeaten with a solid 44-run knock. His only dismissal in the tournament came against Uttar Pradesh when he was trying to accelerate the innings after scoring 112 runs.
Most centuries in Vijay Hazare Trophy season:
1) Karun Nair – 5* in 2024-25 for Vidarbha
2) N Jagadeesan – 5 in 2022-23 for Tamil Nadu
Karun Nair’s scores in Vijay Hazare Trophy:
112* vs Jammu & Kashmir
44* vs Chhattisgarh
163* vs Chandigarh
111* vs Tamil Nadu
112 vs Uttar Pradesh
122* vs Rajasthan
