On July 31, Shah Rukh Khan, Ness Wadia and other franchise owners had a meeting with the BCCI to discuss the IPL 2025 mega auction.

In an interesting learning, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) owner Shah Rukh Khan reportedly had a “heated argument” with Ness Wadia, the co-owner of Punjab Kings (PBKS), during their meeting with the BCCI on the topic of the number of retentions for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.

On July 31, the BCCI hosted the IPL franchise owners for a meeting at their headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium where they discussed various topics, the most important of them being the number of retentions and Right To Match (RTM) cards allowance for the IPL 2025 mega auction and the Impact Player rule.

Shah Rukh Khan and Ness Wadia reportedly involved in a squabble over IPL 2025 mega auction retentions

Cricbuzz has reported that Shah Rukh and Wadia went toe-to-toe on the number of retentions. It is believed that the KKR owner wants a significant number of players to be retained – given that KKR won the title this year, they would want to retain most of their core players – while the PBKS co-owner desires for few retentions as he wishes to revamp his squad.

This led to an argument between the two in front of the BCCI officials and other owners. However, after the meeting, Wadia denied the reports of having a battle with Shah Rukh.

“I have known Shah Rukh for more than 25 years. There is no animosity here. Everyone gave their views, and they had their opinions. At the end of the day, you have to look at all the stakeholders and do what’s best for all. That’s most important,” Wadia said.

Shah Rukh also voiced against the mega auction this year and found an ally in Kavya Maran, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner.

Their opinion on not having a mega auction this year is understandable: both these teams reached the final this year and they wouldn’t want to lose their players because of the mega auction. They cited that franchises need to hold players for a long time to build a fanbase.
