KL Rahul slammed a 137-run knock in the second innings of the ongoing Headingley test.
The India Cricket Team and the England Cricket Team are clashing in the first test at Headingley, Leeds. On Day four, Indian opener KL Rahul slammed a stunning century in the second innings of the match. With 18 boundaries, the right-handed batsman scored 137 runs to help the team reach a mammoth total of 364/10.
KL Rahul also etched a crucial 195-run stand with Rishabh Pant for the fourth wicket, with the latter hitting twin centuries in the game. Pant slammed 134 and 118 to become the first Indian batsman to slam tons in both innings of a test match in England.
KL Rahul, who grabbed the opening slot in the match following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from tests, got out for 42 in the first innings. However, he returned with a crucial century in the second innings to register his ninth ton in tests and third in England.
Not chasing numbers anymore – KL Rahul reacts to poor batting average in tests
After the stumps of day four, the right-handed batter reacted to his poor batting average in tests. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Indian opener acknowledged his poor average in tests but reckoned that he is not chasing numbers anymore and wants to enjoy playing test cricket.
“Of course, it hurts when I look at my average. But at this stage, I don’t want to think about numbers. I want to make an impact whenever I get a chance and enjoy playing Test cricket for India. It’s what I grew up loving,” he said.
“I am just getting runs now. There was a time when I would get starts but not convert them into big scores, especially in Tests. I am much calmer in my head and not chasing numbers anymore. I just want to enjoy my cricket as much as I can,” the 33-year-old further added.
Rahul has a batting average of 34.71 across 59 tests after scoring 3436 runs in 103 innings. This also includes 17 fifties and nine centuries, including a top knock of 199. He made his test debut in December 2014 against Australia.
Meanwhile, India have set up a powerful target of 371 for the hosts in the Headingley test. At the stumps of day four, Ben Stokes & Co were 21/0 on the scoreboard and needed 350 more runs for victory.
