ENG vs IND: KL Rahul becomes second Indian opener to score 1000+ test runs in England; Joins Sunil Gavaskar in elite list

KL Rahul reached the milestone during the Manchester test against England.
The fourth test of the five-match series between England Cricket Team and Indian Cricket Team got underway on Wednesday, July 23 at Old Trafford, Manchester. During the match, Indian opener KL Rahul achieved a massive feat as he became the second Indian opener to score over 1000 runs in test cricket against England in England.
With the milestone, KL Rahul joined former batting legend Sunil Gavaskar in the elite list of Indian openers with more than 1000 runs on English soil. Gavaskar scored 1152 runs as an opener in 28 innings in England at an average of 41.14. He also slammed a double century (221).
Rahul reached the mark in his 23rd innings. As an opener, the right-handed batsman has hammered four centuries and two half-centuries in England. Rahul, who used to bat at multiple positions in the recent past, has now cemented his place as India’s test opener following Rohit Sharma’s retirement.

Meanwhile, Rahul has shown a wonderful form with the bat as an opener in the ongoing test series against England. The right-handed batsman is the fourth highest run-scorer in the series with more than 400 runs in seven innings, his best in a single series.
Rahul has also hit two centuries and one half-century in the series. He hammered centuries in the opening test at Headingley and then at the Lord’s. The Indian opener has done a decent job with his partner Yashasvi Jaiswal to provide India with good starts in the series.
Talking about the Manchester test, England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to field first. While England made one change to their XI replacing Liam Dawson with injured Shoaib Bashir, India have made three changes to their playing XI. Sai Sudharsan, Shardul Thakur, and Anshul Kamboj replaced Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep in the team’s playing XI.
At the end of the first session on day one, Rahul (40*) and Jaiswal (36*) powered the scoreboard to 78/0.
