Kyle Mayers' Half-Century puts Lucknow Super Giants in dilemma

Will Kyle Mayers continue to open for Lucknow Super Giants or will he get replaced by Quinton de Kock once the proteas star returns ?

The new entry in Lucknow Super Giants setup, Kyle Mayers has put the team in some dilemma with his performance in their opening game of IPL 2023. Lucknow Super Giants regular Wicket-keeper, Quinton De Kock is currently busy playing ODI series for South Africa against the Netherlands. In his absence, Kyle Mayers got the opportunity to open the innings with captain KL Rahul. Mayers with one lifeline smashed Delhi Capitals out of the park. He played a scintillating inning of 73 runs in 38 balls smashing 7 sixes and 2 fours. Mayers' knock set the platform for Lucknow to go on and score a big total.

Will Kyle Mayers get a longer run as an Opener?

Left hand batter Kyle Mayers grabbed the opportunity he got as a makeshift opener in place of QDK. They are scheduled to play Chennai Super Kings on Monday. Mayers with his debut performance has put forward a question for Lucknow management. When QDK arrives for the Indian Premier League, who will be playing as an opener? This is a point of discussion in the Lucknow dugout right now. Mayers was also part of the Durban Super Giants in SA20 and had a wonderful season with them. He played in 7 games and scored 163 runs at a strike rate of 134.  

Will Lucknow shift QDK in Middle Order?

After the Chennai game, Lucknow is scheduled to play Sunrisers Hyderabad on 7th April. This game will decide whether LSG management will pick its regular opener or go on with an unchanged combination. Mayers will have an opportunity against CSK as well. If he does well, then definitely KL Rahul as a captain might not think of changing the combination too soon. In the previous season, LSG shifted Ewin Lewis in the middle order to let QDK open the inning with Captain KL Rahul.

Wicketkeeper QDK in the last 10 innings has scored two fifty plus scores. He scored a century in T20I against West Indies and a half-century against MI Capetown in SA20. QDK’s class and ability will surely prompt Super Giants to try him as an opener rather than playing him as Number 3 or 4. Another West Indian Nicolas Pooran is set to lose his place as soon as QDK joins the team. The Only debate Lucknow has to deal with is Where will QDK and Mayers bat for them.
