LA 2028 Olympics: England and Scotland cricket teams could unite to play as Team Great Britain

If England qualify, they will play as Team Great Britain at the LA 2028 Olympics.

Although the LA 2028 Olympics is four years away, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have opened conversations with Cricket Scotland to send a united team as Team Great Britain for both men’s and women’s events.

Cricket is set to return to the Olympics for the first time since 1900. Last year, the ICC recommended six-team tournaments in the T20 format for both men and women to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games organising committee (LA28). The qualification of the teams will likely be based on T20I rankings.

Interestingly, if England qualify for the LA 2028 Olympics, they will play as Great Britain, as is the case in other Olympic sports.

Cricket Scotland happy to contribute staff and players to Team GB for LA 2028 Olympics

Some Scotland players could play along with England players in the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles for Team Great Britain. Cricket Scotland are “keen to contribute players and staff,” but the final decision will be of the ECB as they are the nominated governing body.

“With the Los Angeles Olympics four years away, it’s very early stages, but we’re talking to Team GB and Cricket Scotland about the next steps we need to take,” an ECB spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo.

“Once again Great Britain’s Olympians have captured the national imagination with their exploits in Paris this year, and we look forward to working together to compete when cricket returns to the Olympic stage in 2028.“

Andy Anson, the chief executive of the British Olympic Association, agrees with sending one united team. He said, “We’ve got good experience in golf, in rugby and in women’s football, of how the Four Nations [England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland] can come together and nominate one country to be the main governing body and work with the other countries. So I think cricket will be the same.”
