Afghanistan will take on Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on February 28.

The 10th match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be played between Afghanistan and Australia at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on February 28, Friday.

Having lost their opening game against South Africa, Afghanistan created history by defeating England in Lahore in their last game by eight runs. The Asian underdogs stand on the brink of history as they can qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament with a win over Australia on February 28.

Australia, on the other hand, saw their last game against South Africa washed out due to rain in Rawalpindi. They currently have three points after two games, and a win over Afghans will secure their semi-final spot. But, if they lose the game, they will have to depend on their Ashes rivals England to beat South Africa on Saturday by a huge margin to qualify for the semi-finals.

On that note, let’s take a look at what happened when last time Australia faced Afghanistan in an ODI?

What happened when last time Australia faced Afghanistan in an ODI?

Afghanistan and Australia have faced each other only four times in ODI cricket. Their first meeting was in 2012 in a one-off ODI in Sharjah, followed by clashes in the ICC Cricket World Cups in 2015, 2019, and 2023.

The last time Afghanistan played Australia in an ODI was during the league stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in Mumbai. It was a thrilling contest, with Australia winning by three wickets.

Batting first, Afghanistan were powered by a brilliant century from Ibrahim Zadran, who scored 129 off 143 balls, including eight fours and three sixes. He stitched an 83-run stand for the second wicket with Rahmat Shah, setting the foundation for Afghanistan’s respectable first-innings total.

Rashid Khan played a quickfire knock of 35 off 18 balls, helping Afghanistan reach 291 runs.

In the chase, Australia got off to a poor start, slipping to 91/7. Naveen-Ul-Haq, Rashid Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai starred for Afghanistan picking two wickets each.

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell changed the game for Australia with a once-in-a-lifetime innings, scoring an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls, including 21 fours and 10 sixes. He shared an unbroken 202-run stand with captain Pat Cummins, who showed remarkable resilience scoring 12 off 68 balls. It has to be seen if Afghanistan can avenge their revenge when they meet on Friday, February 28 for their last group-stage encounter.
