IPL 2025 has been suspended after 58 games.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been officially suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday, May 9. The BCCI informed about the decision in an official statement. They took the precautionary step for the safety of players and all others associated with the tournament.
Notably, the 59th match of IPL 2025 between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) was affected on Thursday, May 8. The encounter was halted midway due to technical issues. Later, players, match officials, and spectators were safely evacuated from the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala.
The event occurred in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor by Indian Armed Forces. Also, military tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated and the BCCI has decided to suspend IPL 2025 for a week. However, this is not the first time that an IPL tournament has been suspended with immediate effect.
IPL 2021 was suspended midway due to COVID pandemic
In 2021, IPL was suspended midway by the BCCI under the then president Sourav Ganguly. The tournament was suspended because of severe outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in India, which also affected IPL team camps, where several players tested positive for the Chinese virus.
The previous edition of the IPL in 2020 was entirely shifted to the UAE, but the BCCI then tried to bring IPL home in 2021 and scheduled the tournament in limited venues with bio-bubble protocols.
The BCCI planned necessary steps for the safety of players during IPL 2021. For instance, players and other members involved in the tournament, including broadcasters, had to undergo Covid-19 tests on a regular basis. Only six venues across the country were selected for the tournament and all the teams were expected to travel only a few times during the entire league.
However, BCCI’s measures failed due to third wave of Covid-19 inside the country. The tournament commenced on April 9 and went smoothly till the end of the month. However, a few players and support staff members contracted COVID in the first week of May. Later, multiple reports of Covid-19 cases arrived inside different teams.
As a result, the BCCI officially suspended the tournament on May 3 after the completion of 28 games. Later, the remaining matches took place in UAE in September and October. The tournament resumed with the second leg on September 19. Eventually, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the trophy by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on October 15.
