Sri Lanka have taken a lead of 1-0 in the ongoing three-match ODI series.
The Charith Asalanka-led Sri Lankan cricket team had a game to remember on Sunday in Colombo as they defeated India in an ODI match after more than three years.
Leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay starred for the hosts in the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series at the R Premadasa Stadium.
Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a total of 240 runs, which was more than competitive on the slow, low and turning pitch in Colombo; in the first ODI, India were bowled out for 230 while chasing 231 and the match ended in a tie.
The chase in the second ODI followed a similar pattern as the first ODI. Rohit Sharma hammered the Lankan bowlers in the first powerplay and raced to a half-century. But once he was dismissed for 64 runs off 44 balls, the hosts stormed back into the game. This time, they managed to win the match by a significant margin of 32 runs.
Vandersay ran through the Indian batting order, taking the first six wickets – Rohit, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube and KL Rahul. India collapsed from 97/0 to 147/6 and couldn’t recover later.
With the first match tied and the second match going the hosts’ way, Asalanka’s team have a great chance of winning this ODI series against India.
When was the last time Sri Lanka defeated India in a bilateral ODI series?
Sri Lanka’s last bilateral ODI series win over India came in December 1997. Since then, India have defeated the Lankans in 11 bilateral ODI series with two series drawn. So it has been 27 years since Sri Lanka won an ODI series over the Men In Blue.
The third ODI between these two teams will be played on August 7, also in Colombo.
