Rohit Sharma entered top five in the latest ICC test batting rankings.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) released the latest update of the men’s test batting rankings on September 11, 2024. This sees England’s Harry Brook slipping down seven spots, while three Indian batters gained one spot each.

England’s Joe Root remains the No.1 ranked test batter despite scores of only 13 and 12 at The Oval, though the right-hander’s rating dropped from 922 to 899, allowing New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell, as well as Australia’s Steve Smith, to close the gap.

Similarly, England’s Harry Brook has dropped seven places to 12th after scoring 19 and three against Sri Lanka. Ollie Pope moved up seven places to equal 27th after scoring a century in the first innings against Sri Lanka. Jamie Smith moved up six ranks to tie 30th after a quickfire half-century in the second innings.

However, Sri Lankan batters made merry in the recent update of ICC test batting rankings thanks to their amazing 8-wicket win in the third and final Test at the Oval.

Sri Lanka won their first test away from home in more than a decade in the third test of their recently concluded series, with skipper Dhananjaya de Silva, middle-order performer Kamindu Mendis, and opener Pathum Nissanka leading the way with the bat.

Captain De Silva top-scored for Sri Lanka in the first innings of the Test with a brilliant 69, helping him achieve his best-ever test ranking, moving up three places to 13th overall.

Mendis and Nissanka also discovered new career-best ratings on the list for test batsmen, with the former gaining six places to rise to 19th overall following his own half-century against England and the latter gaining a huge 42 spots to reach 39th spot after an innings of 64 and 127*.

India have not played a test match since March this year, yet batters like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Yashasvi Jaiswal gained one spot each. Rohit Sharma moved to the fifth spot, while Jaiswal is now ranked sixth on the ICC test batting rankings. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, has reached the seventh spot in the rankings.
