List of all hat-tricks taken at ICC T20 World Cups
There have been nine hat-tricks in the men’s ICC T20 World Cup history.
A hat-trick in a game of cricket is a rarity. Therefore, it is a highly celebrated event. It takes immense skill, shrewdness and some luck as well for a bowler to grab a hat-trick.
That there have been only eight hat-tricks in nine editions of the men’s ICC T20 World Cup tells you how rare of an occurrence it is for a bowler to take three wickets on three consecutive legal deliveries.
In this article, we will list the bowlers who have taken a hat-trick in the men’s T20 World Cup.
List of hat-tricks in ICC T20 World Cups (men’s):
1. Brett Lee
Former Australia speedster Brett Lee was the first bowler to take a hat-trick at the ICC T20 World Cup. He achieved it in the inaugural edition of the tournament, in 2007, against Bangladesh. He dismissed Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza and Alok Kapali to secure his hat-trick. Lee’s bowling efforts restricted Bangladesh to 123 and Australia won the game by nine wickets.
2. Curtis Campher
Seamer Curtis Campher became the second bowler to take a hat-trick at the men’s ICC T20 World Cup. He achieved this in the Ireland vs Netherlands match in the 2021 edition of the tournament in the UAE. Campher, in fact, went one step ahead and took four wickets in four balls, the only such instance in the tournament’s history.
He dismissed Colin Ackermann, Ryan ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards and Roelof van der Merwe. Campher’s four wickets in four deliveries forced Netherlands to slip from 51/2 to 51/6. Ireland won the game by seven wickets while chasing 107.
3. Wanindu Hasaranga
Wanindu Hasaranga attained a T20 World Cup hat-trick against South Africa in Sharjah in 2021. While defending 142, the Sri Lankan leg-spinner put his side ahead with wickets of Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Dwaine Pretorius. However, eventually, David Miller took South Africa over the line.
4. Kagiso Rabada
The 2021 T20 World Cup saw three hat-tricks, the third being taken by South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada against England in Sharjah. With 14 runs to defend in the last over, Rabada removed Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan and Chris Jordan on the first three balls to secure his hat-trick and then sealed the match by 10 runs.
5. Karthik Meiyappan
UAE’s young wrist-spinner Karthik Meiyappan took a hat-trick against Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup 2022 in their encounter in Geelong. Meiyappan snapped three middle-order Lankan batters – Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka, and Dasun Shanaka. Despite Meiyappan’s 3/19, UAE lost the game by 79 runs.
6. Josh Little
Left-arm pacer Josh Little is the second Ireland bowler to take a T20 World Cup hat-trick. He achieved this feat in the 2022 T20 World Cup against New Zealand in Adelaide. In the 19th over of New Zealand’s innings, Little removed Kane Williamson, Jimmy Neesham, and Mitchell Santner on consecutive deliveries. Ireland, though, lost the game by 35 runs.
7. Pat Cummins
Cummins is the second Australian bowler to claim a men’s T20 World Cup hat-trick. Cummins recorded this feat against Bangladesh in their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 encounter in Antigua. He dismissed Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan and Towhid Hridoy, and starred in Australia’s victory.
8. Pat Cummins
After his hat-trick against Bangladesh, Cummins snapped another hat-trick in the game just after that, against Afghanistan. He became the fifth bowler to have taken two hat-tricks in men’s T20Is, and the first to do so in ICC T20 World Cup history.
Once again, he got it in the death overs. His wickets included Rashid Khan, Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib.
9. Chris Jordan
Chris Jordan became the first England bowler to take a hat-trick in men’s T20Is, let alone in a men’s T20 World Cup game. He did it against the USA in Barbados, the place of his birth.
This was a must-win game for England. Jordan took USA’s last four wickets in the penultimate over of their innings, three of which on consecutive deliveries. His four strikes in an over bowled USA out for only 115.
