Only three batters have been dismissed obstructing the field in the IPL.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been the first ever franchise-based T20 tournament that brought all the big stars to one place to play with each other in 2008. Over the years, it has seen many incredible moments that are very rare. Just like some never-seen dismissals. Obstructing the field is one of them, for sure.
Obstructing the field is a mode of dismissal that comes into play when the batter stops the ball intentionally in order to stop the ball from hitting the stumps. There have not been many such instances in international cricket as well. In 17 seasons of the IPL, only three batters have been given out by this mode. On that note, we will talk about those three batters here.
Here are the List of all obstructing the field dismissals in IPL
1. Yusuf Pathan – 2013
The first instance in the IPL of obstructing the field was recorded in the 2013 edition. It came in a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors in Ranchi. Batting first, PWI posted a score of 170/4. Chasing the score, KKR were almost on the path to win the game with Yusuf Pathan at 72 off 44 balls. But he got out while obstructing the field on the fifth ball of the 18 over, which changed the game, and KKR fell short by just 7 runs as they managed 163/7. It was the first ever incident of such dismissals.
2. Amit Mishra – 2019
The second instance came in 2019 between the Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Vizag. It was Amit Mishra who got out, obstructing the ball in the chase. SRH scored 162/8 in the first innings. DC made 165/8 to win the match by two wickets. Mishra scored one run off two balls. He got out on the fourth ball of the last over. But Powell hit the boundary of the last ball to win the game.
3. Ravindra Jadeja – 2024
The third instance of obstructing the field happened during a game between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai in 2024. It happened to Ravindra Jadeja while batting second.
Jadeja, who was trying for a double, almost reached the striker’s end when his batting partner Ruturaj Gaikwad denied him the run. Jadeja then had to rush back to the non-striker’s end, but he knew he would get run out by the time he reaches the crease. Seeing that, he came straight into the line of stumps when RR wicket-keeper Sanju Samson was trying to throw and run Jadeja out. In the end, CSK won the game by five wickets, so it didn’t cost the team much.
