The Duleep Trophy was inaugurated in 1961-62 by the BCCI.
The Duleep Trophy is one of the most prestigious tournaments in Indian domestic first-class cricket. Established in the 1961-62 season by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the competition was named after former Indian cricketer Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji. The format marked a unique contest between different geographic zones in India.
Over decades, the competition has served as an important platform for players looking to earn a spot in the Indian Test side. The competition has undergone significant changes over the years. While the zonal format has been part of the majority of its history, some editions featured teams such as India Red, Indian Blue and Indian Green.
The 2024-25 tournament featured India A, B, C and D, four teams including players from different parts of India, before returning to the traditional zonal format in 2025-26.
West Zone are the most successful side in Duleep Trophy history

West Zone are the most successful team in Duleep Trophy history, having won the competition 19 times. They are followed by the North Zone with 18 titles, who are then followed by the South Zone with 13 titles.
Central Zone have managed to clinch the title seven times. While the East Zone have managed to win the title just twice, teams named India Red and Indian Blue also won the titles twice each.
The Duleep Trophy marked the rise of many Indian cricketers. Wasim Jaffer remains the highest-scoring batter in the Duleep Trophy with 2545 runs. He played his entire career representing West Zone and Elite B. Indian batters Vikram Rathour and Anshuman Gaikwad follow him on the list.
Among Indian bowlers, Narendra Hirwani, the former Indian spinner, tops the list as the leading wicket-taker with 126 wickets. He is followed by Sairaj Bahutule and legendary leg-spinner B. S. Chandrasekhar.
