List of all batsmen retired out in IPL ft. Ayush Mhatre, Tilak Varma

Ravichandran Ashwin was the first player to retire out himself in IPL history.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest T20 franchise league, where hundreds of domestic and international players showcase their talent every year. It is also one of the most entertaining cricket tournaments, with strange yet interesting rules that thrill the viewers.

For instance, the Impact Player rule was introduced in IPL in the 2023 season, which helped teams to post mammoth totals with an extra batter in the playing XI. ‘Retired Out’ is another such interesting rule in cricket, which is utilised in the IPL as well. However, this rule is rarely used by players in this league.

This rule states that a batsman can declare himself retired out while batting in any innings. As a result, he will be counted out, and the new batter can take the crease. Also, the retired out batter can come out to bat again in the innings, only if he gets approval from the umpires and the captain of the opposition.

Interestingly, only six players have retired out themselves in the IPL so far. Below are details of all such events.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the first player to retire himself out in the IPL. In the 2022 season at the Wankhede Stadium, the then Rajasthan Royals spinner retired out during a clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Ashwin chose to leave the field in the 19th over of the first innings after scoring 28 runs off 23 deliveries. He made way for Riyan Parag, who helped the team reach 165/6. The strategy worked for RR as they won the match later by three runs in a nail-biting clash, restricting LSG to 162/8 in the second innings.

2. Atharva Taide (55 off 42), PBKS vs DC, Dharamsala, IPL 2023

Atharva Taide is another member in the list of retired out players in the IPL. Playing for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 2023 season in Dharamsala, the left-handed batter retired during the mammoth 214-run chase against Delhi Capitals (DC).

After the end of the 15th over, Taide chose to leave the crease to make way for Jitesh Sharma. He added 55 runs off 42 balls before leaving the crease. However, the move didn’t emerge fruitful as Sharma got out for a duck in the next over. Eventually, PBKS could only reach 198/8 and lost the game by 15 runs.

3. Sai Sudharsan (43 off 31), GT vs MI, Qualifier 2, Ahmedabad, IPL 2023

During the Gujarat Titans (GT) vs Mumbai Indians (MI) clash in the crucial Qualifier 2 game of IPL 2023, Sai Sudharsan became the third player in the tournament’s history to use the retired out rule. The left-handed batsman struggled to bat with pace, adding 43 runs off 31 deliveries till the 19th over.

Then, Sudharsan left the field to allow Afghan all-rounder Rashid Khan to play the final over with skipper Hardik Pandya on the other end. GT posted a gigantic total of 233/3 and then later defeated MI by a huge margin of 62 runs to grab a spot in the final.

4. Tilak Varma (25 off 23), MI vs LSG, Lucknow, IPL 2025

Tilak Varma became another player to utilise the rule of retired out in IPL 2025. During the 16th match of the tournament, MI looked to chase a gigantic 204-run target against LSG in Lucknow.

Coming in to bat at No. 5, the left-handed batter walked off the field in the 19th over. Before leaving the crease, Varma added 25 runs off 23 balls. Mitchell Santner came out to bat after Tilak left the field. However, MI remained 12 runs short of the target and lost the game.

5. Devon Conway (69 off 49), PBKS vs CSK, Chandigarh, IPL 2025

CSK opener Devon Conway retired out in a clash against PBKS in IPL 2025. The Kiwi batsman slammed 69 runs off 49 balls before leaving the crease in the 18th over to make way for Ravindra Jadeja.

He became the fifth player in IPL history to retire out himself. However, the move did not work out well for CSK as they failed to chase down a mammoth target of 220 runs in the match. They lost the game by 18 runs.

6. Ayush Mhatre (59 off 36), CSK vs DC, Chennai, IPL 2026

Ayush Mhatre became the sixth batsman to be retired out in IPL. During the 18th match of IPL 2026 between CSK and DC at Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Mhatre came out to bat at number three.

With Sanju Samson, he etched a stand of 113 runs for the second wicket. He was batting at 59 runs off 36 deliveries when CSK decided to send Shivam Dube into the crease to get maximum runs in the death overs. Hence, Mhatre was retired out and Dube replaced him.
