Captaining country at the highest level is always a feeling of great pride and honour for any cricketer. Every player dreams of leading their country and doing well. A captain enters his name in history if they lead their country to an ICC title. Captains like MS Dhoni and Ricky Pointing are remembered for their success as they won multiple ICC titles.
Captaincy always plays a crucial role in building a team and taking them forward. This article features the captains who marched their teams to the men’s T20 World Cup title.
The maiden ICC T20 World Cup was played in 2007, and until 2024, there have been nine editions taken place. There is only one captain who has won two men’s T20 World Cups. So let’s check out this elite list.
From 2007 to 2022: List of all captains to win the ICC T20 World Cup
1. 2007 T20 World Cup – MS Dhoni (India)
The 2007 T20 World Cup changed the dynamics of the game because it introduced a new ICC event to the world and gave India MS Dhoni, the captain cool. A new captain rarely wins an ICC tournament in his first attempt, but Dhoni did the unexpected.
He led India to success in South Africa to make history. India were brilliant throughout the tournament, beating the likes of Australia, England, South Africa, and Pakistan to clinch the title. In the final, India beat Pakistan to become the first team to win the ICC T20 World Cup.
2. 2009 T20 World Cup – Younis Khan (Pakistan)
The second edition of the ICC T20 World Cup was held in England and Pakistan completed their unfinished business from two years ago. After losing the final in 2007, Pakistan went on to win the trophy in 2009. This win came under the captaincy of Younis Khan, who became only the second captain to lead Pakistan to a Cricket World Cup title, after Imran Khan in 1992. Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the final by 8 wickets.
3. 2010 T20 World Cup – Paul Collingwood (England)
England got their hands on their maiden Cricket World Cup trophy in 2010. Paul Collingwood became the first ever English captain to win a World Cup title in any format. England won the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup, which was held in West Indies. He led the team admirably, and there were a number of key performers on the team. England beat arch-rivals Australia in the final to lift the trophy.
4. 2012 T20 World Cup – Daren Sammy (West Indies)
Daren Sammy remains the most successful captain in terms of winning T20 World Cups. West Indies always had dangerous T20 players, but it was Sammy who brought out their best and led them to title glory in the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup. West Indies made it to the Super 8 on the basis of NRR. But, from thereon, they didn’t look back. West Indies beat Sri Lanka in the final by 36 runs to win their first ICC T20 World Cup trophy.
5. 2014 T20 World Cup – Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka)
The fifth edition of the T20 World Cup was held in Bangladesh, with a total of 16 teams. It was the biggest tournament then. By the end of it, it was Lasith Malinga who led Sri Lanka to the title.
Sri Lanka finished the Super 8 at the top, won the semi-finals against West Indies and then met India in the final. Kumar Sangakkara played a brilliant innings in the final, and Sri Lanka won the title. Lasith Malinga became only the second Sri Lankan captain to lead the team to a World Cup trophy.
6. 2016 T20 World Cup – Daren Sammy (West Indies)
Daren Sammy did a tremendous job in the T20 World Cups. Overall, Sammy has led West Indies in 47 T20Is and won 27 of them. And those 27 wins include two T20 World Cup finals, which is incredible. Sammy led West Indies to the 2016 T20 World Cup triumph, beating England in the final. Carlos Brathwaite was the hero of the final, who hit Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes when they required 21 off the last over to finish the game.
7. 2021 T20 World Cup – Aaron Finch (Australia)
Apart from being one of the finest T20I batters, in the Australian cricket history Finch will also be remembered as the skipper who led them to their maiden men’s ICC T20 World Cup trophy. In the 2021 edition, which was held in the UAE, Australia looked a formidable force throughout the competition and beat New Zealand in the final to lift the trophy.
8. 2022 T20 World Cup – Jos Buttler (England)
England won their second ICC T20 World Cup trophy in 2022; opener and wicket-keeper Jos Buttler led the team to glory. Captaining in this tournament was a challenge for Buttler, as Eoin Morgan had stepped down from captaincy and retired just six months prior to the tournament.
Buttler didn’t have much time as a captain, but he didn’t let the pressure get to him. Buttler led the team superbly after they suffered a shock loss to Ireland earlier in the tournament.
England were rusty at the start but they peaked when it mattered the most. England thrashed India by 10 wickets in the semi-finals and won the final against Pakistan. With this, Buttler became the second English captain to lead the country to ICC T20 World Cup glory.
9. 2024 T20 World Cup – Rohit Sharma (India)
Rohit Sharma made history in 2024 when he took India to their second T20 World Cup title. Rohit led the team pretty well, and India finished the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 without a defeat. They beat South Africa by seven runs in the final, and Rohit became the second Indian captain to win the T20 title after MS Dhoni. He was phenomenal with the bowling changes, calm head, and tactics throughout the tournament. It was the third final under Rohit in 12 months, and he finally led the team to victory.
