Captaining country at the highest level is always a feeling of great pride and honour for any cricketer. Every player dreams of leading their country and doing well. A captain enters his name in history if they lead their country to an ICC title. Captains like MS Dhoni and Ricky Pointing are remembered for their success as they won multiple ICC titles.

Captaincy always plays a crucial role in building a team and taking them forward. This article features the captains who marched their teams to the men’s T20 World Cup title.

The maiden ICC T20 World Cup was played in 2007, and until 2024, there have been nine editions taken place. There is only one captain who has won two men’s T20 World Cups. So let’s check out this elite list.

From 2007 to 2022: List of all captains to win the ICC T20 World Cup

He led India to success in South Africa to make history. India were brilliant throughout the tournament, beating the likes of Australia, England, South Africa, and Pakistan to clinch the title. In the final, India beat Pakistan to become the first team to win the ICC T20 World Cup.

2. 2009 T20 World Cup – Younis Khan (Pakistan)

The second edition of the ICC T20 World Cup was held in England and Pakistan completed their unfinished business from two years ago. After losing the final in 2007, Pakistan went on to win the trophy in 2009. This win came under the captaincy of Younis Khan, who became only the second captain to lead Pakistan to a Cricket World Cup title, after Imran Khan in 1992. Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the final by 8 wickets.

Daren Sammy remains the most successful captain in terms of winning T20 World Cups. West Indies always had dangerous T20 players, but it was Sammy who brought out their best and led them to title glory in the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup. West Indies made it to the Super 8 on the basis of NRR. But, from thereon, they didn’t look back. West Indies beat Sri Lanka in the final by 36 runs to win their first ICC T20 World Cup trophy.

England won their second ICC T20 World Cup trophy in 2022; opener and wicket-keeper Jos Buttler led the team to glory. Captaining in this tournament was a challenge for Buttler, as Eoin Morgan had stepped down from captaincy and retired just six months prior to the tournament.

Buttler didn’t have much time as a captain, but he didn’t let the pressure get to him. Buttler led the team superbly after they suffered a shock loss to Ireland earlier in the tournament.

England were rusty at the start but they peaked when it mattered the most. England thrashed India by 10 wickets in the semi-finals and won the final against Pakistan. With this, Buttler became the second English captain to lead the country to ICC T20 World Cup glory.
