The SA20 is rated as the second best franchise tournament in the world after the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The South Africa Twenty20 (SA20) is the premier franchise T20 league of South Africa. It features six teams based in major cities across the country, all competing for the prestigious trophy and regional pride.

Since its inception in 2023, the league has grown rapidly in popularity, attracting world-class international stars alongside some of the finest domestic talents. The nature of T20 cricket has evolved significantly in recent years, becoming faster, bolder, and more aggressive than ever before.

Over the seasons, the tournament has witnessed several record-breaking team totals that have left fans entertained and amazed. On that note, let’s take a look at the top five highest team totals in SA20 history.

5. 226/5 – Pretoria Capitals

In the inaugural season of the SA20, Pretoria Capitals (PC) posted a massive total of 226/5 against Paarl Royals (PR), which remains the fifth-highest team total in the league’s history. Kusal Mendis was the standout performer, top-scoring with a blistering 80 off 41 deliveries.

He was well supported by the rest of the batting lineup, as several players contributed quick-fire cameos to keep the momentum going throughout the innings. The Capitals’ aggressive approach put immense pressure on the Paarl Royals’ bowling attack and set the tone early in the match.

4. 232/5 – Durban Super Giants

The fourth-highest team total in SA20 history is also the most recent one. In the fourth season of the league, Durban Super Giants (DSG) posted a mammoth total of 232 runs against the defending champions, MI Cape Town.

Devon Conway led the charge with a brilliant 64 off just 33 deliveries, setting the foundation for a massive score. He received valuable support from experienced batters like Kane Williamson and Jos Buttler, who chipped in with crucial contributions to keep the scoring rate high throughout the innings.

In reply, MI Cape Town mounted a strong fightback, with Ryan Rickelton playing a sensational knock and scoring a magnificent century. Despite his heroic effort at the top of the order, the target proved too steep for MICT. They eventually fell short by 15 runs, making this high-scoring encounter one of the most thrilling matches in SA20 history.

3. 243/5 – MI Cape Town

MI Cape Town registered a colossal total of 243 runs against their rival franchise, Joburg Super Kings, in the third season of SA20. The opening partnership between Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton completely took the game away from JSK.

Van der Dussen played a commanding knock, scoring 104 off 50 deliveries, while Rickelton narrowly missed out on a century, finishing on 98 off 49 balls.

In response, JSK crumbled under the pressure of the steep run chase and were bundled out for just 145 runs. MI Cape Town’s dominant performance made this match one of the most one-sided high-scoring encounters in SA20 history.

2. 248/4 – MI Cape Town

MI Cape Town also hold the record for the second-highest team total in the tournament’s history, having posted a massive 248 against Pretoria Capitals in the 2024 season.

Batting first, opener Ryan Rickelton played a sensational knock of 90 off 45 balls, while Dewald Brevis provided strong support with an unbeaten 66 off just 32 deliveries. The rest of the batting unit chipped in with quick cameos, pushing the total to a daunting score.

In reply, Pretoria Capitals also adopted an aggressive approach, but the target proved far too big. Despite their efforts, they eventually fell short and lost the match by 34 runs.

1. 254/4 – Durban Super Giants

The highest team total in SA20 history belongs to Durban Super Giants, who registered a mammoth 254 against Pretoria Capitals in the inaugural season.

Heinrich Klaasen led the onslaught, tearing apart the Capitals’ bowling attack with a breathtaking unbeaten century, scoring 104 off just 44 deliveries.

He received excellent support from the rest of the batting unit, with three other batters also crossing the 40-run mark at impressive strike rates.

Faced with an enormous target, Pretoria Capitals crumbled under pressure during the chase and were bowled out for just 103, resulting in a dominant and one-sided victory for DSG.
