Ricky Ponting played for KKR and MI before taking up coaching roles in the IPL.
Former Australia captain and legendary batsman Ricky Ponting was, on September 18, unveiled as the new head coach of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega-auction. Ponting will replace Trevor Bayliss as PBKS’ head coach.
After a highly successful international career, Ponting swiftly moved into the coaching role. He’s been with the Australian side as a mentor and has worked with multiple teams in T20 leagues around the world. His most prominent roles as a coach, of course, has been in the IPL.
Ponting comes with a great reputation for being a thorough professional and someone who is excellent at guiding youngsters. He’s been credited by the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant for shaping their careers.
He has been part of the IPL since its inception in 2008, initially as a player and then as a coach. Ponting played one season for Kolkata Knight Riders and then played one season for Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2013 before calling it quits. He then coached two different franchises before joining Punjab Kings.
List of all teams coached by Ricky Ponting in the IPL:
Mumbai Indians – 2014-2016

Ricky Ponting was roped in by Mumbai Indians in 2013 and was made the franchise’s skipper. However, he stepped down midway through the tournament with the team underperforming and his own form with the bat being disappointing. He then handed the captaincy to Rohit Sharma, who led MI to their maiden IPL title.
Ponting retired soon after and was added to MI’s staff in an advisory role for the 2014 season. He was then appointed as their head coach in 2015 and coached the side to their second IPL title. Ponting was with MI for one more season.
Delhi Capitals – 2018-2024

Ahead of the IPL 2018 mega-auction, Delhi Capitals (DC) roped in Ricky Ponting as their new head coach. That association lasted seven years.
Ponting started off impressively at the Capitals as the franchise made three consecutive playoffs from 2019 to 2021. DC reached their maiden IPL final in 2020, but lost to MI.
However, things didn’t go as expected from thereon as DC failed to reach the playoffs in the next three seasons – they finished fifth in 2022, ninth in 2023 and sixth in 2024 – leading to his sacking after IPL 2024.
