Ricky Ponting was with Delhi Capitals for the last seven IPL seasons.

After ending his long-term association with Delhi Capitals (DC), former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has joined Punjab Kings (PBKS) as their new head coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction.

Ponting was the DC’s head coach from IPL 2018 to 2024. The Capitals had failed to reach the playoffs in the last three seasons. Hence, the owners decided to part ways with the Australian.

At Punjab Kings, Ponting will replace Trevor Bayliss as the head coach. It has been learned that Ponting will take a call on the rest of the coaching staff. Currently, PBKS have Sanjay Bangar as their head of cricket development, Charl Langeveldt as their fast-bowling coach and Sunil Joshi as their spin-bowling coach.

Ponting is Punjab’s third head coach in four seasons. The franchise finished ninth in the points table last season. They have not reached the playoffs since 2014 and have been rolling through captains and coaches for the past decade with no consistency among the leaders.

Ponting’s first task would be to pick the retention players’ list while the BCCI is expected to finalise and announce the retention policy by the end of this month. With Shikhar Dhawan retiring recently, Ponting and PBKS also have to pick a new captain for the IPL 2025 season.

What is the tenure of Ricky Ponting’s contract with Punjab Kings?

It has been learned that Ponting has signed a four-year contract with Punjab Kings. Which means, he will remain as head coach of the side till end of IPL 2028.

Ponting has been part of the IPL since 2008, first as a player and then as a coach. He played for Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians (MI) and won the title with MI in 2013. After retiring, Ponting was the advisor at MI in 2014 and then their head coach in 2015 and 2016. In 2018, he joined Delhi Capitals and was there until 2024.
