Top 5 lowest totals by India in test cricket
The Indian cricket team has been bowled out thrice below 50 runs in test cricket.
The Indian cricket team are one of the most successful teams in test cricket of all time. Throughout their history, while they have been dominating at home, the Asian giants have also registered several memorable away test match and series wins.
While they have done this through the sheer weight of their legendary batsmen, there have been a few instances when an opponent bowling attack has blown away the Indian batting line-up.
This has resulted in India registering some of the lowest scores in test cricket.
On that note, let’s take a look at the five lowest totals recorded by the Indian cricket team in test cricket till now.

5. 58 vs England, 1952
During the Manchester test match against England in 1952, India were bowled out for 58, which is their fifth-lowest total
England made 341/9d runs after opener Leonard Hutton slammed 104 runs. In reply, India were bundled out for just 58 runs as Fred Trueman bagged eight wickets.
The visitors were once again bowled out for 82 runs in their second innings and lost the match by an innings and 207 runs.
4. 58 vs Australia, 1947
In the Brisbane test in India’s tour of Australia in 1947, the Asian side were knocked out for 58 runs. Australia declared at 382/8 after Donald Bradman scored 185 runs in the first innings.
In reply, India were blown away for 58 and 98 in their two innings. Australia won the one-sided affair by an innings and 226 runs.
3. 46 vs New Zealand, 2024
India recorded their third-lowest total in test cricket in October 2024 when New Zealand bowled them out for only 46 runs in Bengaluru. This is also India’s lowest total in a home test match.
The New Zealand pace trio blew away a strong Indian batting line-up. Matt Henry bagged five wickets, whereas William Orourke took four wickets.
2. 42 vs England, 1974
When India toured England in 1974, they were dismissed for just 42 in the Lord’s test, which is their second lowest score in test cricket.
England amassed 629 runs in the first innings after their opener Dennis Amiss played a stunning knock of 188 runs off 303 balls. In reply, India notched up 302 runs with Farokh Engineer playing a fighting knock of 86 runs.
In the visitors’ second innings, they were dismantled for just 42 runs as Chris Old picked up a five-wicket haul. England won the contest by an innings and 285 runs.
1. 36 vs Australia, 2020
India recorded their lowest total in test cricket of 36 runs against Australia in Adelaide in 2020.
Batting first, India made 244 runs after Virat Kohli played a gritty knock of 74 runs. In reply, Australia were all-out for 191 runs with Ravichandran Ashwin snaring four wickets.
However, Australia’s pace attack produced a marvellous bowling performance in India’s second innings. Pat Cummins took four wickets, and Josh Hazlewood picked up a five-wicket haul as the visitors were bowled out for only 36 runs.
Australia later won the match by eight wickets.
