Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector of Indian Cricket Team is about to end in September.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to have an important discussion with Ajit Agarkar regarding his future as the chief selector of Indian cricket. Agarkar, the former India all-rounder, will complete three years as the chairman of the selection committee in September. However, according to the existing rules, he is eligible to receive a one-year extension.
Agarkar has been one of the key figures in Indian cricket, being involved in India’s squad selection across formats. The role of chief selector is one of the toughest jobs in Indian cricket, as there is a lot of young talent, and choosing who will represent the senior team at the highest level is a major responsibility.
They also have to deal with senior players and have clarity with them regarding their future with the India. Recently, there were many rumours of a rift between the selection committee and the BCCI regarding the future of former captain Rohit Sharma.

The meeting between BCCI officials and chief selector Ajit Agarkar comes amid rumours of a rift between the selectors and BCCI officials. Recently, The Indian Express reported that former Indian captain Rohit Sharma wanted to continue playing ODIs for the Indian team. However, he was reportedly asked by the selectors to retire from the national team after the last ODI match of the England series at Lord’s.
The selectors, after consultation with the team management, wanted to give other young players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal a chance after the ODI series against England. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia openly said that Sharma would continue to represent the India as long as he remain in the scheme of things.
Rohit scored 11 and 29 in his first two innings of the series against England. However, at Lord’s, the 39-year-old opener scored 138 runs, proving that he is still valuable to the Indian team.
According to reports, Sharma was unhappy with the selectors when they asked him to retire, and he subsequently spoke to BCCI officials. The Agarkar-led selection committee removed Rohit Sharma from the ODI captaincy last year, just after he led India to victory in the Champions Trophy 2025.
Ajit Agarkar, who is still eligible to serve as the chief selector of the Indian team until 2027, will have an important discussion with the BCCI. The reports, however, suggest that BCCI is keen on Agarkar continuing till the 2027 World Cup. However, a decision will be made after meeting Agarkar.
