Suryakumar Yadav is the current T20I captain of India.
Under Suryakumar Yadav‘s captaincy, India won the T20 World Cup 2026 title in March. However, his performances have been poor over the past year, and his future as India’s T20I captain is in doubt.
Suryakumar also flopped in the recent Indian Premier League 2026. Playing for the Mumbai Indians, the right-handed batsman scored just 270 runs in 13 games at a poor average of 20.77.
India are set to play a Test match and a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in June. After the campaign, they will tour Ireland for a two-match T20I series. The encounter will take place on June 26 and 28 in Belfast, Ireland.
BCCI to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain- Reports
According to a report by The Indian Express, Suryakumar is set to be removed as India’s T20I captain ahead of the Ireland series. The selection committee will appoint a new captain for the new cycle.
The selectors are now looking for a long-term solution wherein the next captain could lead India in the next two T20 World Cup events.
“The selection committee, BCCI and team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on. Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on,” a top BCCI official told The Indian Express.
Hence, a new captain will be appointed ahead of India’s T20I series against Ireland in June and the following T20I series against England in July. The selectors will take a call after consulting India head coach Gautam Gambhir. However, the decision to snub Suryakumar as skipper has been made. Moreover, he might also lose his spot in the T20I team.
The report also added that Shreyas Iyer is the front-runner to become India’s new T20I captain. Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan are the other two players in the race for captaincy. If Iyer is given the leadership of the T20I team, either Kishan or Varma is expected to be picked as his deputy.
Notably, Iyer has not played in T20Is for more than one year. He was also not part of India’s squad in the T20 World Cup 2026. However, he has impressed with his performance and captaincy in the IPL for Punjab Kings in the last two seasons.
