Suryakumar Yadav is the current T20I captain of India.
Under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, India won the T20 World Cup 2026 title in March. However, his performances have been poor over the past year, and his future as India’s T20I captain is in doubt.
Suryakumar also flopped in the recent Indian Premier League 2026. Playing for the Mumbai Indians, the right-handed batsman scored just 270 runs in 13 games at a poor average of 20.77.
India are set to play a test match and a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in June. After the campaign, they will tour Ireland for a two-match T20I series. The encounter will take place on June 26 and 28 in Belfast, Ireland.
BCCI to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain- Reports
According to a report by Sports Tak, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to remove Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain. The selectors are now looking for a long-term solution wherein the next captain could lead India in the next two T20 World Cup events.
Hence, a new captain will be appointed ahead of India’s T20I series against Ireland. The selectors will take a decision after a consultation with India head coach Gautam Gambhir. However, the decision to snub Suryakumar is very likely.
The report also added that Shreyas Iyer is the front-runner to become India’s new T20I captain. Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan are the other two players in the race for captaincy. If Iyer is given the leadership of the T20I team, either Kishan or Varma is expected to be picked as his deputy.
Notably, Iyer has not played in T20Is for more than one year. He was also not part of India’s squad in T20 World Cup 2026. However, he has impressed with his performance and captaincy in the IPL for Punjab Kings in the last two seasons.
