Major update on India’s white-ball tour to Bangladesh in September

The Indian Cricket Team recently wrapped up their Zimbabwe tour, and will next be playing a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka from August 15. The second Test is due to end on August 27, after which there is no declared international tour.
The West Indies tour of India, comprising of three ODIs and five T20Is, will kickstart from September 27. The matches to be organised in the one-month window between the Sri Lanka and West Indies tour is yet to be announced.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been exploring the possibility to have a T20I series with Afghanistan in the first half of September, before the Indian team leaves for Asian Games. However, there are no official announcements on that yet.
Another development that emerges is, the possibility of a white-ball tour, or just an ODI or a T20I series in Bangladesh. The diplomatic political relations between the two countries were strained in the past few months, but the boards are deliberating on the possibility of a bilateral series.
Will India tour Bangladesh in September?
Times of India (TOI) has reported that BCCI and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are in talks to schedule a white-ball series between India and Bangladesh in the first two weeks of September. Both the boards are working on the itinerary.
The commitment given to Afghanistan for the T20I series is holding BCCI back. The discussions are ongoing. There are chances of the Afghanistan series to be pushed back so as to accommodate Bangladesh tour in the first two weeks of September.
In the past one year, diplomatic relations between the two countries have been tense, due to which India refused to tour Bangladesh last year. Eventually, Mustafizur Rehman was also phased out from the IPL, and Bangladesh opted out from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup hosted in India.
However, with the improving relations, the boards along with the permissions from their respective governments are keen on restoring bilateral series between the two nations. India last toured Bangladesh in 2022, where the hosts won the ODI series 2-1, while India sealed the Tests 2-0.
TOI has reported that BCB has kept all its venues available from September 1. India’s Test series against Sri Lanka is likely to end on August 27, after which Afghanistan Cricket Board were to host India for T20Is from September 13 in New Delhi. If the Afghanistan series is pushed back, a two week window can be opened up for Bangladesh.
Although the BCCI had informed the selectors regarding the Afghanistan series, the official announcement was held back due to the ongoing discussions with Bangladesh. The boards also engaged in talks on the sidelines during the recent ICC meet in London.
