Major update on CSK's new head coach after Stephen Fleming's exit

CSK are assessing candidates after Stephen Fleming’s departure.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are searching for a new head coach after ending their long association with Stephen Fleming in July 2026. The coaching vacancy comes ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027, with the franchise now assessing its options for the role.
Fleming’s departure brought an end to 18-year association with CSK. He took over as the franchise’s coach immediately after retiring as a player and guided the team to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 (CLT20) trophies. The franchise also ended association with him at other Super Kings franchises in Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket.
The decision was made after Fleming had a tough time with CSK as well as other franchises in different leagues. in IPL 2026, CSK finished at the eighth spot, while the Texas Super Kings finished at the bottom of the standings for the 2026 MLC season. The Joburg Super Kings also failed to make it to the SA20 finale during Fleming’s four seasons with the team.
CSK set to finalise new head coach after meeting MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the franchise’s CEO Kasi Viswanathan and director Rupa Gurunath will finalise the franchise’s new head coach after meeting MS Dhoni and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Viswanathan indicated that the franchise are looking for an overseas coach. Although, the franchise has not yet announced Fleming’s replacement, some reports claimed that former India batsman and Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani was in the race to take over the reins of CSK. However, now it appears that the franchise is once again looking for an overseas candidate for the position of head coach.
It remains to be seen what the franchise will decide after their meeting with Dhoni and Gaikwad. They would be hoping to win their sixth title, having last won title in 2023.
