BCCI plans to bring the IPL 2027 auction back to India
The preparations for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season have already started, with franchises now looking at their squads ahead of the new season. The upcoming edition will be a special one as the IPL will complete 20 years in 2027.
Unlike a mega-auction, the IPL 2027 auction will be a mini-auction. This means teams will mostly work with their existing squads and look to fill specific gaps through the auction, releases and trades.
The BCCI is now also planning to bring the auction back to India after three consecutive editions were held overseas. A major update has now surfaced regarding the date of the event.
The IPL 2027 season will also be the final year of the current three-year cycle. This means teams will have another chance to make smaller changes before the next major squad reshuffle.

According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, the upcoming IPL auction is expected to take place in the second week of December 2026. However, the BCCI has not announced the exact date yet.
IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal had earlier said that the board wants to host the event in India. The final venue will depend on availability, especially because December is a busy wedding season in India.
“Since this is a mini auction, we are trying our best to hold it in India. The host city will be decided based on the availability of the preferred venue,” Dhumal was quoted as saying by PTI.
The previous three auctions were held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. The BCCI is now looking to bring the event back home for the upcoming IPL season.
The main issue for the BCCI is expected to be venue availability in December. The month is usually busy because of the wedding season, making it harder to find a suitable venue for the auction.
The board will therefore take a final call based on the availability of the preferred venue. If the plans go ahead, IPL 2027 could mark the return of the auction to India after three consecutive overseas editions.
Meanwhile, the WPL 2027 auction is scheduled for October 28 in Kochi, with the retention deadline set for September 28.
