Virat Kohli fell for 4 runs against Pakistan, while Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets.
Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar subtly mocked Virat Kohli while congratulating his colleague Jasprit Bumrah following India’s nail-biting victory over Pakistan at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 match on Sunday.
The Indian batting line wilted under strain in the high-octane game, scoring 119 runs, their lowest total against Pakistan in T20 World Cup history. Rishabh Pant made 42, while Axar Patel made 20 runs. On the other hand, Virat Kohli fell for just 4 runs and was out in the second over itself.
However, Jasprit Bumrah came to their rescue with the ball, extending their World Cup dominance over their bitter rivals. Bumrah took three wickets for 14 runs as Pakistan collapsed in chasing the reasonable mark, losing by six runs. Apart from him, Hardik Pandya picked two wickets as well.
While India media obsesses over Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah has been the best player in the team: Sanjay Manjrekar
Manjrekar praised Bumrah for his spectacular performances with the ball while also criticizing Kohli for receiving all of the spotlight leading up to the blockbuster showdown. Kohli, India’s dominant hitter in big contests against Pakistan over the last decade, had a rare dud performance on Sunday.
The batting master was dismissed in the second over after attempting to escape the shackles early and miscuing the shot at point, where Usman Khan took an excellent catch. The 35-year-old is one of the most well-known cricketers in the world, serving as the ICC’s poster boy to promote cricket in the United States of America.
Manjrekar called Bumrah the best player in the Indian team while taking a dig at Kohli.
“While Indian media obsesses over Virat & Co, Jasprit Bumrah quietly wins games for India single-handedly. By far the best player in the Indian team & has been for a while now. #JaspritBumrah #ICCT20WC,” Manjrekar wrote on X.
Bumrah once again delivered a standout effort with the ball. Bumrah turned the game in India’s favor with a spectacular penultimate over, conceding only three runs and taking the important wicket of Iftikhar Ahmed.
His brilliance made things easier for Arshdeep Singh in the final, where he only had to defend 18 runs and did so handily.
