Marnus Labuschagne made 58* and added 192 runs with Travis Head in Australia’s World Cup 2023 final win.

Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne has retired the bat with which he played a crucial knock in the ICC World Cup 2023 final against India. The final was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023.

Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl first on a black soil wicket. India got an excellent start thanks to a whirlwind 47 by captain Rohit Sharma. But after he got out in the 10th over, India went into a shell as Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were unable to hit boundaries regularly.

Kohli made 54 in 63 balls, while KL Rahul struggled during his knock of 66 runs off 107 balls. India hit only four fours in the last 40 overs and limped their way to 240 in 50 overs.

In reply, India pacers Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah did early damage as David Warner (7), Mitchell Marsh (15) and Steve Smith (4) fell cheaply to leave Australia 47/3 in 7 overs.

Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne then added 192 runs for the fourth wicket to douse the hopes of the Indian team of making a comeback in the match. Head blasted 137 runs with 15 fours and four sixes and was named Player of the Final.

Labuschagne played a gritty knock of 58* off 110 balls, hitting only four fours. Labuschagne’s solidity allowed Head to be aggressive and clinch the final for Australia.

The 30-year-old Labuschagne was tested by menacing bowling spells from Indian seamers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who were in excellent form throughout the tournament. But the right-hander remained steadfast at the crease and supported Head admirably.

Labuschagne recently shared the image of the bat he used in the final. It is in a worn-out condition, with the wood scraping off it and has decided to retire it.

“Think it’s finally time to retire the World Cup final bat,” Labuschagne captioned his Instagram post with a picture of his bat.
