Martin Guptill is currently in India to participate in the Legends League Cricket 2023.

New Zealand cricketer Martin Guptill has said that he is hated by the whole of India thanks to him running out of MS Dhoni during the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 which was played in Manchester England.

India and New Zealand had clashed in the first semi-final of the 2019 World Cup in Manchester, England. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson had won the toss and chose to bat first. He led from the front, scoring 67 runs and with Ross Taylor’s 74, took the Black Caps to 239/8 in 50 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up three wickets for India.

However, the last 4 overs of New Zealand innings were played on reserve day as rain intervened. And that proved to be fatal for the Indian team, as New Zealand bowlers generated huge swing in overcast conditions and had the Men in Blue batters in all kinds of trouble.

The top three of the Indian batting lineup, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and then captain Virat Kohli were all dismissed for 1 run each. The score became 24/4 when Dinesh Karthik got out for 6 runs. Rishabh Pant with 26 and Hardik Pandya with 32 brought some stability to the Indian innings.

Had one and a half stumps to aim at and I just got lucky: Martin Guptill on running out MS Dhoni

But their dismissals put India in a tough spot at 92/6. Then MS Dhoni (50) and Ravindra Jadeja (77) launched a scathing counter-attack, adding 116 runs to take India close to the target. First Jadeja got out for 77 and then it was for MS Dhoni to take India home.

Lockie Ferguson struck the seasoned Ranchi hitter with a crisp bouncer, and his response was somewhat delayed, edging the ball behind square. He risked a second run in a daring move because no fielder was guarding that location. Guptill sprinted in from fine leg, quickly collected the ball, and struck the stumps with precision.

Dhoni fell inches short of the crease as the ball dislodged the bails, sealing his dismissal and India’s hopes.

Talking about the same, Martin Guptill was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying: “It’s one of those things that happened so quickly in the moment. All I remember was I saw the ball go up and I then I thought, oh no, it’s coming sort of more towards me. So, I put the skates on to get on with that run. I knew there was no chance of a throw at the stumps, but I just tried to have a shot and only had one and a half stumps to aim at and I just got lucky. The stars aligned, and it was a perfect throw. In other words, the whole of India doesn’t like me. I get plenty of hate mails from there.”

Guptill is currently in India for the 2023 Legends League Cricket, where he represents the Urbanisers Hyderabad.
