David Warner scored 52 runs before Matheesha Pathirana took blinder at third man.
In a stunning turn of events in the field during match 13 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the ACA-VDCA Stadium on March 31, CSK fielder Matheesha Pathirana produced a brilliant effort in the field which already looks like to be ‘best catch of the season.’
Pathirana took the catch of DC veteran opener David Warner, who was playing a brilliant innings. This acrobatic catch appeared out of nowhere and stunned everyone in the field.
The incident occurred in the 10th over of the DC’s innings. Warner smashed his 62nd IPL fifty and was looking to take the game away from five-time champions CSK. However, Pathirana had other ideas on the field.
Mustafizur Rahman was bowling his third delivery of the 10th over when DC opener Warner attempted a reverse-lap. Mustafizur bowled a slower and fuller delivery towards Warner, and the veteran batter hit it decently well.
Pathirana, who was standing at third man, dived to his right and stretched his right hand really far back to pluck off this one-handed catch behind his head. Soon after the dismissal, everyone was left stunned by this brilliant effort from Pathirana, who is also known as Baby Malinga.
The left-handed batter Warner smashed 52 runs off 35 balls, including five boundaries and three sixes, with a good strike rate of 148.57.
Here is the viral video of Matheesha Pathirana outstanding catch:
Warner’s dismissal came at a crucial juncture of the match as he and Prithvi Shaw had stitched together a promising opening partnership of 92 runs in 58 deliveries. Pathirana’s exceptional catch has effectively put the brakes on DC’s innings and given CSK a much-needed first breakthrough in the match.
