Matheesha Pathirana picked two wickets against the Netherlands in Sri Lanka’s 83-run victory.
After failing to clinch a single win in their first three matches, Sri Lanka finished their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a high with a convincing 83-run victory over the Netherlands.
At the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia on Sunday night, the Lankans outclassed the Dutch in all departments to take their first and only win of the group stage. Both Sri Lanka and the Netherlands have failed to qualify for the Super 8 round of the competition this year.
Matheesha Pathirana floors Aryan Dutt’s off-stump
Young Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana showcased his skills and potency with the ball in hand by castling Netherlands’ Aryan Dutt with a searing delivery. Dutt had, though, made matters worse for himself by exposing all three stumps with the intention of targetting the offside boundary.
With the game moving away from the Netherlands, as they fell far behind in their chase of the target of 202 runs, Dutt tried to hit Pathirana for a boundary on the offside by creating room for himself. But he moved too far outside the leg-stump which gave Pathirana all three stumps to aim at.
The slingy-actioned young Lankan pacer hurled a pacy delivery on a good length and in the line of the off-stump. Dutt missed his shot and the ball rattled into the off stick. The ball knocked the stump out of the ground.

Left-handed middle-order batsman Charith Asalanka bagged the Player of the Match award for his quickfire knock of 46 runs in 21 balls that pushed Lanka’s total beyond 200. Nuwan Thushara was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka as he earned figures of 3/24.
