Matheesha Pathirana suffered an injury during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup 2026 clash against Australia.
Sri Lanka Cricket Team fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana’s fitness has been one of the trending topics with Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 around the corner. The 23-year-old was purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2026 mini-auction for a whopping price of INR 18 crore after releasing the likes of Anrich Nortje and Spencer Johnson.
Pathirana, who changed alliances last year, was a crucial part of the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) bowling line-up in the last four seasons. He improved significantly during the 2023 and 2024 seasons under Dwayne Bravo.
However, due to a dip in his performance and consistency last year, he was not retained by CSK for the 2026 edition. In 32 matches for the five-time champions, the Sri Lankan bowler picked up 47 wickets at an economy rate of 8.68, and his best figures were 4/28.
While the KKR were optimistic about going into the new season with full strength, they suffered a major blow at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 when Matheesha Pathirana sustained a calf injury during a group stage fixture against Australia. Two days later, Dilshan Madushanka was announced as his replacement for the World Cup.
Will Matheesha Pathirana play IPL 2026 for KKR?

With almost two weeks remaining before the coveted tournament gets underway, Pathirana posted a picture on Instagram on Tuesday (March 10), revealing that he’s still in Sri Lanka due to his rehabilitation.
“Hello, everyone!! Just to clarify, I’m still in Sri Lanka continuing my rehab with SLC. I haven’t gone to India yet, so please stay calm!”
In the picture, the Sri Lankan bowler was seen wearing intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices on his legs.
When Matheesha Pathirana suffered a calf injury, reports claimed the 23-year-old might miss four weeks before returning to action. Recently, he provided an update about his situation, which seemed positive as he asked fans to stay calm.
With two weeks still remaining before the three-time champions commence their campaign in the IPL 2026, Pathirana can potentially make his return. However, if he fails to complete a full recovery within the speculated time frame, the fans should expect to see the bowler in the second game (via SRH on April 2) or the third game (vs PBKS on April 6).
KKR will play their first game on March 29 against the five-time champions, the Mumbai Indians.
