[Watch] Matheesha Pathirana uproots Devdutt Padikkal's leg stump to send him back for 13
Devdutt Padikkal scored 13 runs before being castled by Matheesha Pathirana.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Chepauk on April 23 in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This is the second meeting between the two teams, with LSG defeating CSK in Lucknow.
LSG captain KL Rahul won the toss and decided to bowl first. And they were able to capture some cheap wickets, as Ajinkya Rahane (1), Daryl Mitchell (11), and Ravindra Jadeja (16) were all out by the 12th over for 101 runs.
But Ruturaj Gaikwad was scoring runs at the other end, and once he was joined by Shivam Dube, CSK’s scoring rate skyrocketed. Dube scored 66 runs in 27 balls, including seven sixes and three fours, and Ruturaj remained unbeaten on 100 with 12 fours and 3 sixes, as CSK made 210/4 in 20 overs.
In reply, LSG lost Quinton de Kock for a duck in the first over itself. Then KL Rahul (16) and Marcus Stoinis added 33 runs to steady the ship a bit before Rahul was caught by Ruturaj Gaikwad off Mustafizur Rahman.
While Stoinis was hitting the ball well and kept LSG on track, he needed support from the other end. Devdutt Padikkal was the next man in and a lot was on the line for the left-hander. He has not been in form for the LSG in this IPL 2024, failing to reach double figures in the last 5 matches he played, with the highest score being 9 vs PBKS.
Matheesha Pathirana ends Devdutt Padikkal’s vigil at the crease
The Karnataka leftie who had made quite an impact in his debut IPL season for RCB, has not been able to repeat that kind of form for either Rajasthan Royals or his new franchise, LSG. He was traded into LSG by giving Avesh Khan to RR. While Avesh Khan has been brilliant for RR, Padikkal has struggled with form.
Even in this match, though Padikkal scored 13 runs, he took 19 balls to do that and he couldn’t hit a four or a six in his knock. His misery was ended by Matheesha Pathirana in the 11th over, as the Sri Lankan pacer clean bowled him with a searing length ball at 151.3 kph. Padikkal remained on the leg side and only made a half-hearted attempt to defend it, but was beaten for pace.
