Kolkata Knight Riders are sweating on the fitness of Matheesha Pathirana since the start of IPL 2026.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) entered Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 with huge expectations as three-time champions, but the season has started in the worst possible way. KKR have suffered two straight losses, falling to Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Cameron Green, who joined for a record-breaking INR 25.2 crore, has struggled so far, scoring only 18 against Mumbai and getting run out for just 2 against SRH. With an unsettled batting order and some questionable selection calls, Ajinkya Rahane’s team need to find answers fast as they face an in-form Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Eden Gardens tonight.
Beyond the scoreboard, the injury list is just as concerning. KKR’s management has pointed to the absence of key pacers Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, and Matheesha Pathirana to explain their early struggles, though many believe a flawed team strategy is the bigger issue.
Harshit Rana is out for the whole tournament after a knee injury he picked up during the 2026 T20 World Cup warm-ups. To fill the gaps, KKR signed Blessing Muzarabani to replace Mustafizur Rahman, who was released from squad, and Navdeep Saini for Harshit Rana, but they still haven’t named a replacement for Akash Deep.
Will Matheesha Pathirana play for KKR vs PBKS in IPL 2026?

As for the big question on every KKR fan’s mind: Matheesha Pathirana will not be playing in tonight’s match against PBKS. Despite being bought for a massive 18 crore, Pathirana hasn’t even joined the squad yet as he recovers from a calf injury sustained during the 2026 T20 World Cup.
While he is back at training, Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed he isn’t match-fit and has with held his NOC for IPL 2026 for now. According to Sri Lankan journalist Danushka Aravinda, Pathirana still needs fitness clearance from the SLC medical department and won’t be able to join KKR until at least April 15 or 16.
However, RevSportz suggests he could be ready for the April 9 game against Lucknow or, more likely, the April 14 clash with Chennai Super Kings. Until then, KKR’s pace attack is looking very thin just when they need it most.
Is Matheesha Pathirana playing in the KKR vs PBKS match tonight?
No, Pathirana is currently unavailable due to a calf injury and a lack of fitness clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket.
When is Matheesha Pathirana expected to join the KKR squad?
He is projected to be match-fit around April 9, with a likely return to the lineup by April 14 against Chennai Super Kings.
